Although the process to initially obtain your CDL was lengthy, the renewal process is straightforward.

Requirements for Renewal

Bring your expired or close-to-expiring Commercial Driver's License to your local driver's license office. Unlike Class E licenses (regular Florida Driver's Licenses), you can ONLY renew your CDL in person.

Be prepared to:

  • Take a vision test and pass with 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses
  • You may be required to perform a medical exam again
  • Show proof of your identity, social security and 2 proofs of residential address

Renewal Fees

  • $75 for a CDL renewal
  • $7 per endorsement

If your CDL includes a HAZMAT endorsement that you wish to maintain, you will be required to submit to a fingerprint and background check by the TSA. Since this process can take some time to complete, it is recommended that you begin the process at least a month before your CDL expires. Commercial licenses with a HAZMAT endorsement must be renewed every four years.

What You Need To Know

  • The background check requires an application fee of $91
  • Schedule a fingerprinting appointment with your nearest DMV office
  • Complete the HAZMAT Endorsement Application
  • After the TSA sends approval to the FLHSMV, you will receive the renewed CDL with the HAZMAT endorsement (valid for four years) through the mail
